“Daily incompetence is the norm and generally forgiveable for the gift of living in paradise.“
Xenophobic Chick, made the above assessment of her adopted (and loved) homeland. Those of us who are honest, even if blinded by bias and unashamed love of country, have to confess the truth of the Chick’s assessment.
There is definitely something lovable and charming about our culture of incompetence. It resides from the highest levels of the society all the way to the street characters, vagrants and criminals.
Visitors are pleasantly amused at the phenomenon, Tourist find it charming and return time and again (in disbelief). A few observers even suspect that it is a case of superior competency being cleverly masked in order to maximize benefits and to mislead enemies. This later ploy being aimed at discouraging others from the realization that God is actually a Bajan and that therefore, all Bajans are specially blessed and guaranteed the very best of everything – no matter what.
WELL I BUSH TEA DON’T BUY THAT CRAP.
It is abundantly clear to the bushman that there is a BIG problem; that we have low or no standards, that we suffer from poor leadership, that we have poor self image, no pride in ourselves, no plan for our future and no respect for our selves or our God.
Worse of all, this mediocracy and incompetence REALLY p*** the bushman off, especially the casual and meek acceptance of crap by the sheeple of Barbados.
Bush tea is hereby inviting all concerned people of competence (or even incompetents wishing to change) to look out for examples of spectacular Incompetence to be highlighted here on the ‘Blogosphere’.
The objective is to highlight blatant areas of incompetence; pressure jokers to set and maintain the high standards that Bajans deserve, shave down many square pegs presently distorting round holes and hold those responsible for setting and maintaining standards ACCOUNTABLE.
What say you the people?
Bush Tea,
Not all Bajans are incompetent. For instance the garbage men who picked up on my street last year.
Every garbage day, they were outside my door at 5.am. In the dark. You know what? They never left a piece of garbage on the street, they never came a minute late, nor early.
When you woke up and looked out, one would think they had swept the street. This was in Town.
Then there was the hairdresser I went to. Just walked in and made an appointment for the next day. Excellent service, very good job on the cutting, even gave free advice on what to use to counter the sun (I live up North), and you know what? She does not even sell any products!
So, I hauled my behind off to a hair products ” “emporium” on St. Michaels Row, opposite the Cathedral. The young lady who served me was most competent. After not finding what I had, she walked several isles and recommended other products, with their pros and cons, and the store was busy, busy, busy.
I left there feeling so good, that when I hit Cave Shepherds and people (because of the sweat) relaized I was ‘foreign’ and wanted me to purchase duty free for them, I gladly agreed. Even the cashier on second floor got in on the act. She wanted a pant suit, so I said why not, the more the merrier!
No Bush Tea, Bajans are slackers when they want and competent at other times. That is the way in Paradise.
Pat,
You realize by now that Bush Tea knows better than to argue with you. OF COURSE YOU ARE RIGHT.
I could also add some for you…My lunch hangout is like heaven. EXCELLENT, affordable, fresh food, friendly service, good atmosphere….. ummmmm.
Just recently I wrote a note to my lawyer (and this is true…) thanking him for really OUTSTANDING service and saying how impressed I was…. and my garbage men are like clockwork too, plus I cannot remember my last electricity outage…
But Pat, I know, and you know, and I know that you know- that this is a TOO SMALL minority situation.
Can you say that this was (is) your general experience – excellent service?
Most importantly, tell me where you see SYSTEMS in place to support such quality performances (as opposed to the naturally good worker who could well be in a bad mood tomorrow…)
